Association of Radical Midwives (ARM) and appeal for support

May 30, 2007

ARM has been going since the 70’s and offers an alternative to a heavily medicalised and pathology obsessed obstetrician led birthing process.

They currently are campaigning around attacks on independent midwifery by the UK government.

If you are involved with the group, or have opinions about it, please comment below.

For those interested in getting involved in ARM, the next national meeting is in Nottingham on Saturday 16th June. There will be workshops and discussions as well as report-backs about ongoing campaigns.

For more info contact Kerri Anne Gifford: 01158470483

    Other interesting points about ARM:

*As well as supporting the campaign to save independent midwifery, they are very supportive of midwives struggling to provide quality care in the NHS. (And ’struggling’ is the right word!)

*They are considering forming a radical midwifery trade union as the Royal College of Midwives (the only existing midwifery union in the UK) is seen as being too friendly with NHS managers and politicians. The union would likely be radical in the sense of fighting for midwives’ and womens’ interests, rather than anti-capitalist etc. A working group is investigating how feasible this is at the moment.

Anyway, definitely check out the ARM website! :)

I’m doing a research project and need to find the number of obstetrician consultants in the UK and the number of professional midwives.

I have Googled several terms and queries w/o success. Any help would be appreciated.
